What Makes Our Approach To Child Therapy Different

Most counsellors who work with children started out working with adults and expanded their age range to build their practice. At Sound Youth Counselling, it's always been the other way around. Our team has spent their entire careers working with kids and teens. It's not something we added on, it's who we are.

Our approach is strength-based and big picture. We believe every child already has something to work with, and our job is to help them find it. We also think about the whole environment a child lives in, their family, their school, their community, because none of us exist in isolation. Sessions are warm, low-pressure, and led by what each child needs, whether that's talking, playing, drawing, or just having a safe space to show up.

Who We Work With

We provide child therapy for kids starting around age 5, though we will sometimes see younger children depending on their needs. There is no upper age limit, and many children who start with us continue working with our team well beyond their early years.

We work with children in person at our Parry Sound and Huntsville locations, and virtually with families throughout Ontario. Parents are a valued part of the process. We keep session details private, but we regularly share strategies and tools so you can support your child at home between appointments.

Our Team

The counsellors at Sound Youth Counselling share a common thread, a genuine passion for working with children and a deep understanding of what kids actually need to feel safe enough to open up. Our team brings a range of certifications and specializations, including trauma and attachment work, DBT, play-based approaches, and family therapy. Individual therapist bios and credentials are listed on our team page.

We also work closely with community organizations throughout the region, including the Children's Aid Society, the Victim Quick Response Program, and surrounding First Nations communities. This community involvement shapes how we show up for the children and families we serve, connected, culturally aware, and deeply rooted in the North.

Our Space

Our office is nothing like a clinic. We've worked hard to make it feel cozy, inviting, and warm, a place where kids actually want to come back. The space is stocked with fidgets, stuffies, art supplies, toys, and comfortable couches, giving children plenty of ways to settle in and express themselves beyond words.

For younger children, parents are welcome to join sessions, especially in the early stages. What matters most is that your child feels comfortable, and we'll follow their lead on what that looks like.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Children can benefit from counselling when big emotions start getting in the way of everyday life — things like school attendance, friendships, or family relationships. If your child seems stuck, is struggling with a big transition, or just can't figure out what to do with their feelings, therapy for kids can give them new tools and a safe space to work through it.

  • Sessions are warm, relaxed, and child-led. Our space is cozy and stocked with fidgets, toys, art supplies, and comfortable seating, nothing clinical about it. For younger children we often work through play, drawing, movement, or storytelling rather than traditional talk therapy. Parents of younger kids are welcome in sessions, especially at the start.

  • Yes. We offer virtual counselling for children and families throughout Ontario, so you can access support from home regardless of where you're located.

  • We believe parents are a key part of the process. While we keep session details private, we regularly share strategies for home so you can support your child between appointments. Think of it as your child getting new ideas from a different trusted adult — and you getting a toolkit to back it up
